This is my newest recipe, after a lot of trial and error, I finally got it right.  I use a GF flour blend from Costco but you can use any GF flour.  I make buttermilk by adding 2 T. white vinegar into a 1 cup measure then filling the rest of the way with milk. Let it set up for 5 minutes or so until thick.

Serendipity Squares Technique Tutorial

June 27th, 2013

1. The faculty of making fortunate discoveries by accident.
2. The fact or occurrence of such discoveries.
3. An instance of making such a discovery.

I LOVE making serendipity squares. They are a great way to use up scraps of that gorgeous paper that I just can’t seem to throw away. I took a few pictures of the latest set I made. They are so easy and make  great economical embellishments.

Serendipity Squares Card WEB

First, get a few coordinating papers and tear them into pieces, approx 1/2″ wide and in varying lengths. Include a solid with some stamping and some crinkled vellum.

With a good scrapbook quality glue stick, adhere glue to the back of each piece and start placing them randomly onto a sheet of cardstock. I have used white but you can use any color you choose that coordinates with your papers. It will show through so keep that in mind. You might want to get some scrap paper or waxed paper to do this part.

I like to start with the darkest color then layer the torn edges over it.

When you are finished you should have something that looks like this.  Just a few more pieces of vellum and it will be ready. Let it dry completely.

Now for the fun part. With a square punch, fussy cut your squares.

This one doesn’t look good, let’s try another spot.

Better, but…..

Just keep looking until you get the perfect placement.

Another option is just to cut the entire sheet into squares with your paper trimmer. You will get a lot more squares but may need to go back and add a few papers here and there.

That’s what I did last time and was surprised at how many more pieces I got out of it.

This is the stamp I used on red cardstock with white ink. It’s from Penny Black.

You can stamp and emboss, add eyelets and wire, beads, anything that fits your theme.

I made a set of beach ones and added tiny shells, starfish, buttons and beads to them.

You are only limited by your imagination.

Have fun and go create something beautiful.
